Be Careful Who You're Talking To!

I've long lamented, with many others, the change in the meaning of various words, including gay, weed, grass, cool, and straight. I heard another perversion Tuesday, though, that still has me shaking my head. The testimony of the teenage witness went something like this:
My sister's been talking to this guy and I was talking to him about a guy I'm talking to. The guy my sister's talking to, the one I was talking to....
ad infinitum. I interrupted from the bench to clarify, and my question and her answer erased about the same confused looks on the lawyers' faces I'd been feeling. I asked her, "Is 'talking to' like dating?" Her answer? "Well, kind of." Geesh.

Fortunately I have dealings with sanity that counterbalance the counter-culture. That hearing extended over so I had to reschedule what I was supposed to do on Tuesday afternoon, and that is to talk to 4th grade students from Bowie Elementary School. They had read Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science and I talked about my books and about the developments in forensics over the same period of time. It was fun, and they asked intelligent questions and were involved in the learning process. Such a vast difference! It would be awful to be stuck in the "talking to" culture.
